Tribal Theme – Druid’s Call

Heed the Call of Nature

Tribal theme is a very popular theme in normal variant. In EDH, it is no less the same. In fact, EDH could make Tribal theme even more powerful. This is achieved by the synergy between the cards in the huge EDH deck. So in line with this, today we would like to share with you some ideas of a Tribal deck with the Creature type – Druid.

Back History:

A little history about these Green Creatures, Druids begins life in MtG as Ley Druid, adding Llanowar Elves and Verduran Enchantressafter the Great Creature Type Update. Most Druids main ability thereafter had mainly been to interact with Lands, occasionally Artifacts and Creatures, by tapping or untapping them. Other than that, Druids will  be producing mana to help in accelerating your mana development. Druid came into limelight during the Odyssey block when they were featured as the main Green Creature type, replacing Elves for the block. Although still doing the same thing they do previously, a tribe of Insect Druid was introduced here. These Insect Druids did one more thing other than produce mana, tapping to add power and toughness to other Creatures. Subsequently, Druid slowly became a sub Creature type, due to the Great Creature Type Update, acting more like a class to the main Creature type now. Today the Tribal group had became a more diverse group for the Tribal group of Druids, featuring all sorts of other abilities beside mana acceleration; providing a decent number of Druids to make the Tribal theme possible.

Untapping:-

Working with Nature

As mentioned above, many of the Druids main ability is to untap Lands. This allows you to get extra mana out of the Lands as you could tap them again either for mana or some other abilities these Lands might have. As you could see from the below list of examples of druids, some of them do not just untap one Land but multiple Lands at a time. Therefore this could use as a means of mana acceleration for your EDH decks, as the most recommended form of mana acceleration for EDH are Lands. Remember that when they say untap target Land, you don’t have to untap those which produce only one mana; instead go for those that produce more than one mana.

Name Abilities
Arbor Elf T: Untap target Forest.
Argothian Elder T: Untap two target Lands.
Elder Druid 3G, T: You may tap or untap target Artifact, Creature, or Land.

Land Search: –

EDH Land rampers favorite Old Man

As a mainly Green Tribal group, Druids also accelerate your mana by searching for Lands. This way of mana acceleration is actually better than the above way (producing mana itself) as Lands do not usually get hit that much in EDH. A mass removal could se t you back when you are using Creatures mana producers. Below are some examples of Druids which accelerates your mana this way.

Name Search method and Abilities
Avenging Druid When it deals damage to an opponent, reveal cards from your library until you reveal a Land card. If you do, put that card onto the battlefield and the rest revealed this way into your graveyard.
Centaur Rootcaster When it deals combat damage to player, you may search your library for a basic Land card and put that card onto the battlefield. If you do, shuffle your library.
Civic Wayfinder When it enters the battlefield, you may search your library for a basic Land card, reveal it, and put it into your hand. If you do, shuffle your library.
Coiling Oracle When it enters the battlefield, reveal the top card of your library. If it’s a Land card, put it onto the battlefield. Otherwise, put that card into your hand.
Diligent Farmhand 1G, Sacrifice it: Search your library for a basic Land card and put it onto the battlefield tapped. Then shuffle your library. If it is in a graveyard, effects from spells named Muscle Burst count it as a card named Muscle Burst.
Elvish Pioneer When it enters the battlefield, you may put a basic Land card from your hand onto the battlefield tapped.
Farhaven Elf When it enters the battlefield, you may search your library for a basic Land card and put it onto the battlefield. If you do, shuffle your library.
Hermit Druid G, T: Reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a basic Land card. Put that card into your hand and all other cards revealed this way into your graveyard. (Combo potential)
Krosan Wayfarer Sacrifice it: You may put a Land card from your hand onto the battlefield.
Ondu Giant When it enters the battlefield, you may search your library for a basic Land card and put it onto the battlefield. If you do, shuffle your library.
Yavimaya Elder When it is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, you may search your library for up to two basic Land cards, reveal them, and put them into your hand. If you do, shuffle your library.2, Sacrifice it: Draw a card.

Land Interaction: –

“Your Lands are ours.”

Druids are also famous for their connection to the Lands. A lot of them have abilities which deal with Lands or have something to do with Lands besides just untapping and searching for them. Below are some examples which you could consider into your decks.

Name Abilities
Awakener Druid When it enters the battlefield, target Forest becomes a 4/5 Green Treefolk Creature for as long as Awakener Druid is on the battlefield. It’s still a Land.
Gilt-Leaf Archdruid Whenever you cast a Druid spell, you may draw a card.Tap seven untapped Druids you control: Gain control of all Lands target player controls.
Groundskeeper 1G: Return target basic Land card from your graveyard to your hand.
Nantuko Cultivator When it enters the battlefield, discard any number of Land cards. Put that many +1/+1 counters on it and draw that many cards.
Thelonite Druid 1G, T, Sacrifice a Creature: Forests you control become 2/3 Creatures until end of turn. They’re still Lands.
Tilling Treefolk When it enters the battlefield, you may return up to two target Land cards from your graveyard to your hand.

Enchantments: –

Job Change

This maybe unknown fact to some, but the famous Enchantress had became classed under Druid after the Great Creature Type Update. Thus Druids have a little connection to Enchantments too. As a minor sub-theme, Enchantresses could be considered into your deck for some extra card draws.

Name Abilities
Argothian Enchantress Shroud. Whenever you cast an Enchantment spell, draw a card.
Femeref Enchantress Whenever an Enchantment is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, draw a card.
Fugitive Druid Whenever it becomes the target of an Aura spell, you may draw a card.
Gatherer of Graces Gets +1/+1 for each Aura attached to it.Sacrifice an Aura: Regenerate it.
Mesa Enchantress Whenever you cast an Enchantment spell, you may draw a card.
Verduran Enchantress Whenever you cast an Enchantment spell, you may draw a card.
Yavimaya Enchantress Gets +1/+1 for each Enchantment on the battlefield.

Solution: –

Expanding Resume

Druids could also double as your solution card for Artifacts and Enchantments when needed. Either by destroy that outright or punishing your opponents for playing them.

Name Abilities
Citanul Druid Whenever an opponent casts an Artifact spell, put a +1/+1 counter on it.
Druid Lyrist G, T, Sacrifice it: Destroy target Enchantment. (Like Gigantiform….)
Nantuko Calmer G, T, Sacrifice it: Destroy target Enchantment. (Like Angelic Destiny…..)
Nantuko Vigilante Morph 1GWhen it is turned faced up, destroy target Artifact or Enchantment. (Like Sol Ring or Sylvan Library…)
Nullmage Advocate T: Return two target cards from an opponent’s graveyard to his or her hand. Destroy target Artifact or Enchantment. (Political card)
Quagmire Druid G, T, Sacrifice it: Destroy target Enchantment. (Like Phyrexian Arena…..)

Tokens: –

Animal Lover

To a small extent, Druids are capable of producing you an army of tokens to beat down your opponents too. Though this route is rather limited as of now, here are the Token producers available which could be included till date.

Name Abilities
Broodhatch Nantuko Whenever it is dealt damage, you may put that many 1/1 Green Insect tokens onto the battlefield.Morph 2G
Mycologist At the beginning of your upkeep, put a spore counter on it.Remove three spore counters from it: Put a 1/1 Green Saproling token onto the battlefield.Sacrifice a Saproling: Gain 2 life.
Nut Collector At the beginning of your upkeep, you may put a 1/1 Green Squirrel token onto the battlefield.Threshold – Squirrel Creatures get +2/+2.
Squirrel Wrangler 1G, Sacrifice a Land: Put two /1 Green Squirrel tokens onto the battlefield.1G, Sacrifice a Land: Squirrel Creatures get +1/+1 until end of turn.

Combos: –

Here are some combos you could consider playing with these Green guys: –

Cards Combo
Broodhatch Nantuko + Darksteel Plate Damage will never kill it as long as Darksteel Plate is on it. Throw in Pariah’s Shield to redirect all damage dealt to you to Broodhatch Nantuko instead for more Insect tokens. Add in an Essence Warden for some crazy life gain.
Centaur Rootcaster + Whispersilk Cloak Allows you to attack and ramp your mana at the same time.
Civic Wayfinder; Coiling Oracle; Farhaven Elf; Ondu Giant + Cloudstone Curio This combo would help to ramp your mana. Any other Creatures with Enter the Battlefield effects could be used here too.
Elvish Archdruid; Priest of Titania + Ambush Commander Huge boost to your mana, but risky move too as a board sweep will leave you obliterated. Be sure to leave 1G to end off the Ambush Commander ability when that happens.
Gilt-Leaf Archdruid + Druids The lord who is the main combo of the whole theme. Provides card advantage and a finishing blow to your opponents.
Groundskeeper + Spellshapers Endless supply of cards for your Spellshapers.
Groundskeeper + Squirrel Wrangler Get back the Lands you had sacrificed to create the Squirrels .
Kamahl, Fist of Krosa + Crovax, Ascendant Hero The famous “G: Destroy target Land” combo.
Krosan Restorer + Umbral Mantle Works only when you have reached Threshold. You could then choose to get infinite mana by untapping Lands which could produce more than one mana; or get Krosan Restorer to infinitely huge through the combo and attack for the win.
Quirion Druid + Darksteel Citadel Creates an indestructible critter.
Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary; Viridian Joiner + Umbral Mantle Usually an infinite mana engine once it starts.
Seedguide Ash; Yavimaya Elder + Lifeline Ramp up your mana as these guys die and return due to Lifeline effect. Combo could also be used with other a Any other Creatures with Enter the Battlefield effects. Lifeline serves double purpose as a political means for you to other players too.
Thelonite Druid + Echoing Courage Activate Thelonite Druid then Echoing Courage your Forests, changing them from 2/3 to 4/5 Creatures.
Thelonite Druid + Vitalize Similar effect with Rude Awakening. Float all your Green mana. Activates Thelonite Druid, then cast Vitalize and go in for the kill. Use all those floating mana for an Overrun, or combine combo with Rude Awakening.
Thriss, Nantuko Primus + Drumhunter; Exuberant Firestoker; Sunseed Nurturer Ensuring that each one of the “5 or greater” works at your every end step.
Zoologist + Sensei’s Divining Top An extra Call of the Wild for your deck.

Recommended Generals: –

Baru, Fist of Krosa – You definitely won’t get to use his Grandeur ability, but with his first ability of pumping your army with each Forest entering the battlefield serves it well as a Beatdown General. You could easily deal a lot of damage a turn, and that damage is all Trample damage too. Include ways to put in multiple Forests a turn (Everbark Shaman; Exploration; Explosive Vegetation; Journey of Discovery; Khalni Heart Expedition; Hunting Wilds; Seedguide Ash; Skyshroud Claim) for the finishing blow. Even if the above finishing strategy fails, you still stand a chance as you had build up your mana along the way and able to cast more epic spells with all those mana.

Kamahl, Fist of Krosa – Another beatdown Commander which pumps your army with as many as time you could pay for his Overrun ability.

Kaysa – The simple basic Green lord-style General.

Lord Magnus – For those who would like a Green and White Commander which is also a Druid.

Seton, Krosan Protector – Mana ramp strategy as every Druid you control is one G. Note that Druids which are summoning sickness could still be tapped for this ability, giving you access of Green mana the moment they entered the battlefield.

Thelon of Havenwood – For those who would like a Green and Black General which is also a Druid (Color identity is Green and Black due to Thelon’s ability). Small Fungus theme possible with his power pump as a Fungus lord.

With that, we shall end off the article and leave you to building a Druid EDH deck of your choice. Hope you had enjoyed reading the article and be able to help in your deck building for a Druid EDH Tribal deck.

This is yours truly, Edward “Reaper King” Leong, signing off.

:D~
