Justin & Kaalia of the Vast

Beaten up by a hot babe

Hi there, fellow EDH-ers. For today interview article, I will be talking to fellow EDH-er & recent Standard playtest mate, Justin Lee. Justin likes to play self-brew decks in Standard and is always looking for ways to use certain cards. As a self-proclaimed Blue-hater, quite often than not his deck are very much related to Aggro or reanimation. Reanimation is very much an age old tactic that had been used in the past. Win con Creatures will be countered by Blue but they can be reanimated giving them a second chance. One such example of the tactic was the Buried Alive deck which had the self-reanimating Creatures of Nether Shadow & Ashen Ghoul and later Ichorid & Bloodghast. Those Creatures are fairly easy to cast and all could returned themselves from the graveyard uncounterable through different means. One of his Standard decks which I played against also happened to be a Reanimator deck of sorts too. Before the rotation, his deck was able to reanimate Creatures like Ashen Rider & Sylvan Primordial through the means of Obzedat’s Aid & Whip of Erebos. Later changed to match up with the recent Standard then, reanimation is still in the deck with Creatures with ETB (Enter the Battle) effects as only Whip of Erebos is left for his deck whipping up Creatures like Abhorrent Overlord; Hornet Queen; Siege Rhino. Not one to shy away from experimenting, he was the first person I knew of to try out and show us that some cards are good. We were defeated by his innovative use of Sidisi, Brood Tyrant and her Zombies. As we underestimated her board presence only to realize too late how threatening was she the first time he used her. His build was further proven to be successful as it was coincidentally built by Miyawaki Takayuki as his 4 Colors Junk, although not totally identical at first but after Justin’s further modification, it was much closer to Takayuki’s version. Bringing his innovation to EDH, Justin is always reviewing his deck choices as much as he can through his free time as new sets comes out; constantly updating his deck with more powerful spells. Thus it is with that that his deck is always updated with the latest cards. With the brief intro of today guest done, now let us begin with the interview.

Me: First of all a big thanks to Justin for your time in between your “busy schedule” to be with us. So to begin with our interview, let’s begin with the usual question I had asked all the other guys. What deck will you share with us and any deck name to it?

Justin: Kaalia of the Vast Control

Me: I see. Now the Commander already says a lot about the deck but still it would be better if you could explain how is the deck supposed to work?

Justin: Using ETB effects of Dragons, Angels and Demons (DADs) to rule the game. Note that most of my creatures have disturbing ETB effects which I can abuse using Kaalia’s ability. Kaalia acts as an Elvish Piper for these 3 Creature types. She enforces high threats in the battlefield that puts opponents at pressure. Creature Kill deck. Deal with her or just die…

Me: I see, rather typical of the Mardu way of life. So tell us more about the inspiration behind the creation of the deck?

Justin: I’ve always love stories about Dragons, Angels and Demons (Vampires too). Thus, when I first saw Kaalia, I know that she will be my first EDH deck that I will create. In addition to that, I love Mass Destruction! Mardu colours give the most premiere mass removal spells available. Black is my favorite MTG colour, while Blue is my hate. Counter her or just die…

Kaalia of the Vast sits within her mountain chapel pondering both the heavenly host and the infernal horde, tormented by her past, scarred by devastation. Her once-simple life as a cleric was reduced to ashes when shadowy beings massacred her congregation. Somehow she survived, but her soul was fractured, and a growing hatred soon grew in the cracks. Now, driven by a righteous fury and an unholy thirst for revenge, Kaalia broods feverishly, amassing her vast power, waiting to unleash her apocalyptic might upon any who stand in her way.” – As quoted from Wizards of the Coast, Daily MTG Page

Me: Hmm… I see, thus Kaalia of the Vast Control was your first EDH deck. Looks like Kaalia had descended to bring you into EDH. How did the creation process go about?

Justin: At first I thought this deck should be easy to build. Just squeeze in all the powerful DADs and wait for Kaalia to do her job. However after much testing, I gradually switched from Aggro to pretty much controlish style. While I was playing, I realized that Kaalia will not be effective if you got no DAD cards at hand, and most likely lose the game by playing top deck mode. Thus, I added in quite a fair bit of drawing cards. With the combinations of Mass Removals followed by Reanimations, this strategy can actually bring me to late game and having more advantages over my opponents.

Me: How well did the deck perform during each EDH session?

Justin: Actually I dun really care about winning. The most important factor in EDH is to have fun. With the help of tutors, I can transform the battlefield into different tension depending on my feel:

  1. Serious mode: Search for Avacyn, Angel of Hope or Iona, Shield of Emeria.
  2. Torturous Mode: Search for Gisela, Blade of Goldnight
  3. Relax Mode: Search for Kokusho, The Evening Star
  4. Fun Mode: Search for Lord of the Void
  5. “Buay Song (Not Happy) With You” Mode: Search for Master of Cruelties

Me: Oh yes… That was indeed a lot of nasty surprises we had with that 1-2 Punch combo of Master of Cruelties…. So to end it off, what’s your next idea if any?

Justin: Moving forward the strategy is to change out all DADs with no ETB effects. I wanted to create this deck to fully taking advantage of Kaalia’s ability. Thus when a DAD ETB it will have a direct immediate impact on the battlefield. Cards such as Scourge of the Throne; Kokusho, The Evening Star; and Aurelia, the Warleader would be change out in the near future if there are better ETB DADs available. In addition to that, I will be focusing on improving the reanimation strategy of the deck to further take advantage of ETB DADs.

Me: …….. (You mean the deck is gonna get more annoying!!! ROAR~!!!!!!!!!(╯°□°)╯︵ / (o口o )\ )

From the short intro of his deck, we can see that Justin’s featured EDH deck has a rather similar approach to his Standard deck. As no deck is perfect, Justin had also gone through several variations and upgrade to his EDH deck to reach the present stage of utilizing ETB and reanimation. Creatures with ETB effect had been generating card advantage since they were introduced. From the first class of Man-o’-War; Nekrataal; and Uktabi Orangutan; which all were used a lot during their time in Standard. ETB Creatures basically served their purposes the moment they hit the battlefield. When it starts attacking, you are already earning extra bonus time out of it. If opponents have to spend a removal to get rid of the Creature, it had generated card advantage for you since that would be one removal down. Combining ETB Creatures with reanimation let you yield more advantage out of them. This is particular good for Justin’s deck as his DADs all have high cc. Reanimation totally negates that and cheats the DADs in. Pretty much what his Commander Kaalia does for him, cheating in huge monsters onto the battlefield to terrorize us. Now let’s have a look at the deck in more detail and see what monstrosity you will face when going up against Justin and Kaalia.

Lands:-

Nomad Outpost

Land of the Mardu

Justin’s choice of Lands fall mainly into two categories: Color Fixers and Utility. Since Kaalia requires all three color of Mardu to cast, most of the early part of the games we will see him trying to assemble the three colors as soon as possible in order to avoid the situation of lacking the colored mana needed to cast Kaalia. Next the utility Lands, although not a lot of them, are mainly used to aid his DADs’ attack or to prevent Kaalia from dying in combat.

Arid Mesa / Bloodstained Mire  / Marsh Flats Fetchlands which really helps a lot for his deck color fixing, works especially well with the large amount of dual Lands and shocklands he has in his deck.
Badlands / Blood Crypt / Godless Shrine / Plateau / Sacred Foundry / Scrubland The best of the Lands. Especially good when combined with the fetchlands.
Clifftop Retreat / Dragonskull Summit The tapped duals, also called Check Lands, which mostly enter his battlefield untapped due to the huge amount of dual Lands and shocklands he has.
Boros Garrison / Orzhov Basilica Slow color fixers but good boost in mana in mid and late game. Can also be use to reset Vesuva.
Blackcleave Cliffs A great help in early games but can be a hindrance when draw in mid and late game.
Rakdos Guildgate Extra mana fixer. Might have already been changed to Bloodfell Caves as we write this article.
Tainted Field Conditional White and Black dual Land. Part of the cycle of Tainted Lands that helps decks with Black. Sort of pioneers of the Check Lands.
City of Brass / Command Tower / Vivid Meadow The all round color Lands which can produce the desired color mana when needed.
Reflecting Pool Combos especially well with the above three Lands. It is to be noted that even if Vivid Meadow has no counters on it, Reflecting Pool can still produce any color mana when both are on the battlefield.
Shizo, Death’s Storehouse Utility Land which gives extra insurance to help prevent Kaalia from being blocked to death when attacking.
Slayers’ Stronghold Allow his Creatures to attack the moment they hit the battlefield and still be able block after that. Especially good for his DADs which are all relatively huge.
Vesuva Copies opponents’ “nice” Lands.
Mountain (4) / Plains (5) / Swamp (4) The basic Lands which makes up the rest of the Land slots.

Mana Ramp and Mana Boost:-

Chromatic Lantern

Shining the way to the right colors

Mana fixing doesn’t just stop at the Lands. Like other EDH-ers, mana rocks are also used too. As can be seen from the list, the mana rocks he used are all rather commonly used ones. It was noted by Justin though that he noticed the deck tensed to not be able to draw into his mana sources. We attributed that to the constant tutoring he has in the deck and with little shuffling after each games might had led to his cards to pile up. This has yet to be confirmed though.

Boros Signet / Orzhov Signet / Rakdos Signet Mana fixer and mini mana ramp.
Chromatic Lantern Mana ramp and mana fixer by itself.
Darksteel Ingot Everyone’s favorite Indestructible mana rock in EDH
Sol Ring / Thran Dynamo / Worn Powerstone Common used mana rocks in EDH which produce more than one mana.

Card Draw and Tutors:-

Bloodgift Demon

“A toast to more cards~ Oei…. Drink up man….”

As mentioned earlier, Justin had switched the mode of the deck from Aggro to more Control due to the obvious fact that Kaalia becomes useless when he has an empty hand or no DADs in his hand. To counter this weakness, he had chosen these card draws and tutors to ensure his hand is juicy enough for Kaalia.

Card Draw
Ambition’s Cost / Night’s Whisper / Read the Bones / Sign in Blood Classic Black card drawing spells which converts life into card draws.
Bloodgift Demon / Staff of Nin Extra card draw at upkeep.
Moonlight Bargain A spell with a possible huge card advantage which also helps Justin to fill up his graveyard for reanimation.
Tutor
Diabolic Revelation A very powerful late game tutor as mana will be abundant then.
Diabolic Tutor We are guessing that Justin had probably used this because he does not have the original Demonic Tutor…..
Increasing Ambition Good Flashback tutor which tutor for one more card if it is Flashback.
Liliana Vess Repeatable disruption and tutor and finally building up to the ultimate which we will come to that later….
Rune-Scarred Demon Tutor which Justin can use to beat someone with.

Diabolic Revelation

Knowledge…. Knowledge everywhere

Removals:-

Sever the Bloodline

To utterly defeat someone….

Every deck needs a couple of these. If you cannot neutralize your opponents’ threats, you just cannot win the game. Justin had chosen quite a fair amount of removals to include in his deck should the situation gets too out of hand before he gets out of hand himself.

Single Removal
Condemn This spell had been cursed and swore by many as the ultimate Commander removal. As long as the Commander does not has Hexproof or Shroud, condemn will outright remove the Commander from being a threat. Unless the player has some form of tutor, or ways to reshuffle the library accompany with some good luck, it is going to take a long time before the Commander be out on the battlefield again.
Overseer of the Damned Single Creature removal. Provides Justin with extra blockers as opponents’ Creatures die.
Path to Exile / Swords to Plowshares The best of the single removal. The low cc allows these two to be cast easily. And also leaving one White mana untap can also generate the same psychological scare to prevent opponents from attack for fear of losing the attacker. The same can also be achieved with Condemn.
Silence the Believers This spell is good and recommended for how it can neutralize a Creature and Auras attached to it. Auras are disadvantages normally in normal variant as you lost a lot of card once the Creature the Auras are attached to is gone. But retrievers are very common in EDH. Normally exiling the Creature is not enough. Silence the Believers solve that problem by exiling the Creature and all Auras attached to it. The added bonus of Strive is really added value to the spell especially in late games.
Sever the Bloodline Although not that useful for its exile all “with the same name” in EDH, Sever the Bloodline is beneficial to play for having Flashback.
Utter End All purpose threat removal.
Mass Removal
Akroma’s Vengeance Powerful reset button with Cycling.
Austere Command The most versatile selective mass removal.
End Hostilities The best mass removal after Wrath of God. Dubbed the Voltron killer.
Merciless Eviction Another versatile removal which usually puts the game back into Justin’s favor.
Planar Cleansing The most powerful reset button. Justin’s ultimatum when things get too out of hand for him.
Rout Mass removal with choice at Instant speed. Surprise the shit out of us a couple of times.
Wrath of God First of the mass removal and still the best around.

Merciless Eviction

One does not simply get rid of one threat.

Fast and Furious:-

Uncanny Speed

Strike the enemy before they can strike you.

For most of the time, Kaalia will be the one bringing in the DAD. But when they are brought in otherwise; hard cast or reanimated; they will have summoning sickness. Waiting around for one turn can be quite dangerous for Creatures thus Justin had include the below to ensure the DADs attack at least once for the game.

Anger For most part this guy is a 2/2 with Haste. The true fun is when it is in the graveyard and Justin has a Mountain, his whole army then has Haste. This Creature is always the one which Justin kept tempting us to kill it or first to be sacrifice when he is forced to do so.
Fervor Straight forward Enchantment to give all his Creatures Haste.
Lightning Greaves / Swiftfoot Boots Everyone favorite Equipment. Give Haste and protection to the equipped.
Slayers’ Stronghold Repeatable way to give Haste to Creatures or DADs when they are hard casted or reanimated. Often overlook resource in the late game as Justin hides it among his pile of Lands…

Plan B:-

Animate Dead

“You do know that you do not have to always pay my casting cost up front?”

The main core of Justin deck is to abuse Kaalia attack trigger. When that doesn’t happen, Justin had look to reanimation to bring the DAD in. This allows him to reuse those DADs that was destroyed or discarded. Moonlight Bargain serves this purpose in a way, allowing him to discard the DADs. Quicksilver Amulet is also in the deck for the same reason. The Artifact allows him to skip the huge cc of the DADs, requiring only 4 and tapping of the Artifact to put a DAD onto the battlefield. If all else fail, he could still hard cast all those DADs with the mana ramps he had with the mana rocks.

Animate Dead The classic reanimator Aura. Good in the sense that it can steal opponent’s fallen Creatures.
Bladewing the Risen Reanimator for Dragon permanent cards.
Karmic Guide Reanimator for all Creature cards.
Liliana Vess The ultimate which is actually a Rise of the Dark Realms mostly win games unless everyone graveyard is empty. Liliana can also be use to discard DAD if needed.
Mimic Vat Best combo with DADs with attack triggers and ETB effects. Everyone favorite Artifact to steal opponents’ fallen Creatures too.
Reanimate Same as Animate Dead but lacks the weakness of losing the Creature when you lose the Aura. Life loss usually does not pose much of a problem for the starting life of EDH unless we decided to take Justin out right from the start which will render his life in the red zone.
Unburial Rites Handy reanimate spell with Flashback. Recommended for all reanimator decks which can use it.
Yawgmoth’s Will A second chance on all his resources in the graveyard. Usually consider as Justin’s powerful late game play or Final Fortune style play when he is in a Do or Die situation.
Quicksilver Amulet Throws in a DAD at the opponent’s turn and be ready to attack with it when it’s his turn.

DAD:-

The main idea behind the deck was Justin’s love for stories involving the fantasy Creatures of Dragons, Angels, & Demons (and also Vampires). The main meat of the whole deck are below and as mentioned by Justin, much of the deck had evolved over the course of play testing to finally arrive at the below choices. I must say some of the choices which had remained after all the play testing are pretty crazy powerhouse. As mentioned the deck was made to abuse Kaalia’s attack trigger; thus all the DAD high cc are neglected. Wizards usually employ high cc to justify or balance powerful Creatures; and when that is skipped it becomes an insane advantage. Furthermore, Justin had geared most of the DADs towards immediate rewards; meaning he instantly reaps the reward of the DADs the moment they enter the battlefield. This effectively means every time Kaalia attacks, it leaves us hanging on our seats as we will be guessing what other Creatures and effects, if any, will be coming at us.

Dragons:-

Hellkite Tyrant

Tyrant of the Sky

The savage beat stix which come mainly from the Red fraction; Dragons form most of the beat stix gang of his deck. A lot of times they are the ones who finish the opponents for him.

Balefire Dragon This Dragon serves as the horde control for the deck.  As it has Flying, it would usually be able to deal combat damage and the trigger will then wipe out the defending player’s army. There are not many Creatures which can survive 6 damage.
Bladewing the Risen Serves double duty as a beat stix and also reanimator. Tribal pumping is also good as a finisher. Its reanimator ETB effect may be further abuse when combine with permanent cards with Changeling; or Conspiracy to allow it to return any Creature from the graveyard.
Hellkite Tyrant The anti-Artifact Dragon. Justin normally uses this Dragon to steal all Artifacts from an opponent; and if the Dragon doesn’t kill that opponent, he will proceed to use all the stolen Artifacts to get to the alternate win con. Considering EDH uses a lot of mana rocks, the steal will usually tremendously ramp Justin’s mana. Trample ensure combat damage can get through.
Kokusho, the Evening Star Kokusho was once banned for use as Commander for the insane amount of life gain it can provide. It is still the same insane Creature now and I believe Justin had chosen it for his deck due to that. Kokusho would normally bring Justin from the brink of defeat right back into game and ahead of us.
Scourge of the Throne The Dragon which has the potential of single-handedly turning the game around especially when Justin is of single digit life total; winning the game there with the extra attack phase.
Steel Hellkite Another board control among the ranks of Dragons. The selective board sweep makes this Dragon a top pick among many EDH players.

Angels:-

Avacyn Restored Fatpack

Protectors of the Innocent

The holy avengers of the Divine which comes mainly from the White fraction; these Creatures provide support role in the deck, normally serving as removal and control.

Angel of Despair The all purpose removal. Especially advantageous when brought in using Kaalia attack trigger, giving you a chance to remove a blocker.
Angel of Serenity This Angel serves dual purpose of removal and retriever for the deck. First it can exile blockers with its ETB effect. Justin mostly uses it more as a retriever to return DADs to his hand for Kaalia.
Aurelia, the Warleader Like Scourge of the Throne, Aurelia also serves as a finisher with her additional attack phase. She is usually the one who takes us by surprise and finishes us off most of the times. As most of the beat stix, especially the DADs of the deck, are fairly huge, having an extra attack phase can be very lethal. Aurelia is slightly better Scourge of the Throne for having a lower cc and easier to fulfill condition for extra attack phase.
Avacyn, Angel of Hope The most dreaded Angel for Kaalia to bring in. Sends us scrambling to find answers to her every single time she happens. Flipping of the table is not an answer, not sportsman like at least.
Gisela, Blade of Goldnight She who speeds up the game. Another one of the most dreaded Angel to have around. Due to the damage doubling effect of hers, the game is always speed up and bring to an end. It doesn’t help us too in the fact that she prevents half the damage rounded up to Justin’s side. Although we sometimes take advantage of her damage doubling effect on Justin’s opponents’ sides, the game would always ends up back into Justin’s favor afterwards as long as Gisela stays on the battlefield. Top of our Angel hunt list.
Iona, Shield of Emeria The bane of mono color decks. This Angel can single-handedly cripple any mono color deck, although we have yet to see Justin do it on anyone… yet.
Karmic Guide Karmic Guide serves the same purpose as Bladewing the Risen as a reanimator for the deck but with more versatility. Combo machine when combined with Kaalia.
Magister of Worth A very political card and very situational to use. Provides many interesting games for us though.
Resolute Archangel The life saver of Justin deck. This Angel had numerous times saved Justin from the brink of losing the game by resetting his life total to the max again.

Demons:-

Lord of the Void

“On to the battlefield, moi minions~”

The foul life defilers of the unholy which come mainly from the Black fraction; these Creatures provide disruption and support at the right price.

Bloodgift Demon Phyrexian Arena with wings. This Demon provide additional draw for Justin to help him draw into more DADs for Kaalia to throw out.
Lord of the Void This Demon serves as a form of removal as it exiles cards from the library of the player it hits. Bonus of stealing a Creature from the exiled cards.
Master of Cruelties Part of the one-two punch killer combo of the deck.
Overseer of the Damned Creature removal and token producer in one.
Rune-Scarred Demon Demonic Tutor with wings.

Combos:-

Here are some of the combos in the deck.

1-2 Punch Combo

Losing without knowing what’s coming….

Master of Cruelties + Staff of Nin The one hit kill and number one combo of the deck. Master’s attack trigger is used here to bring the defending player life total within kill range of the Staff.
Kaalia + Master of Cruelties Another one hit kill combo. As Master is brought into the attack by Kaalia, its attack alone clause is cancel out. What happens next is the defending player will have his life total change to 1 by Master and then be killed by Kaalia. This combo has the element of surprise but is usually avoided by Justin due to its un-fun-ness.
Kaalia + Karmic Guide  + Bladewing the Risen This combo is not so much about attacking but more to prepare a huge horde as the end result will leave Justin with at least two Dragons behind to block after the attack.
Karmic Guide  + Sepulchral Primordial The best reanimation usually netting Justin tons of Creatures. Gets even more annoying when Karmic Guide is bring in with Kaalia. This is also the best move to recover after a board sweep.
Mimic Vat + Angel of Despair Reusable removal.
Mimic Vat + Angel of Serenity Refills the hand with Creatures since the Vat created Angel token will leaves the battlefield at the end of turn. Also can be use to save own Creatures from board sweep.
Mimic Vat + Aurelia, the Warleader Extra attack phase every turn.
Mimic Vat + Karmic Guide Reusable reanimator combo easily achievable since Karmic Guide will die when its Echo cost is not pay.
Mimic Vat + Resolute Archangel Makes Justin nigh unkillable.
Mimic Vat + Rune-Scarred Demon Endless supply of tutors.
Mimic Vat + Sepulchral Primordial Slowly steals everyone Creatures in the graveyards.

Rest of the deck:-

Mother of Runes

“My Family Protects all Families.”

Mother of Runes Protects the “family”.

And there you have it, the marvelous control deck from Justin. Special thanks again to Justin for taking his time out for this interview and sharing his deck with us. We hope you had enjoyed reading this article as much as we had writing it. Thus till our next article….

This is yours truly, Edward “Reaper King” Leong, signing off.
