Rakdos Cackler

The Surprising Good Pressure Producer

When Return to Ravnica first hit the shelf, everyone was pretty skeptic about the ability Unleash. Even Wizards was not really sure this ability was good enough for Draft. At the end of the day, it turns out the ability was really aggro. Numerous violent decks came out utilizing the mechanic as players started giving up the ability to block to kill their opponents faster. Today General comes from that guild which featured the mechanic, Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch.

Unleashed Bloodlust – Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch

Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch

“It’s Party Time! Boys!!”

Exava is the current Blood Witch of the Cult of Rakdos, taking charge of the guild “parties” and second in command to Rakdos. Exava has pretty decent stats even without Unleash. 4cc for a 3/3 may not seems exciting at first but the additional First Strike and Haste is what makes her worth the 4cc. When unleashed, she would be a 4/4 with First Strike and Haste, all ready to attack as she hits the battlefield and taking out most blockers with her First Strike. The next part of it now is that she gives Haste too to other Creatures you control with +1/+1 counters on them. That effectively makes her an Unleash Lord as Creatures with Unleash all give you the choice of giving them a +1/+1 counter as they enters the battlefield.

Commander Potential

Aggro EDH decks are usually very weak as Aggro tends to lose steam in the late game. Since Creatures play a big part in the style, it is not easy to maintain the heat facing the whole table with their board sweep. As such, Exava makes a better support Creature than a General. A possible way to use her as General is to abuse that “Unleash Lord” ability. Besides using the obvious Unleash Creatures you could also use the Undying Creatures too, as with her all Undying Creatures you control which came back from Undying have Haste. There are not a lot though since the ability came quite late in the Innistrad block and you have only two colors to work if you use Exava as General. Below are the Undying Creatures available as of now. Also additionally Mikaeus, the Unhallowed could also grants Undying to your other non-Human Creatures if you need more Undying Creatures.

Black

Red

Butcher Ghoul

Flayer of the Hatebound

Demonlord of Ashmouth

Hound of Griselbrand

Evernight Shade

Nearheath Stalker

Geralf’s Messenger

Pyreheart Wolf

Sightless Ghoul

Treacherous Pit-Dweller

Vengeful Vampire

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed

An Unexpected Collaboration, No one Stays dead Forever.

Other themes you could use for her includes the Shaman lord, Rage Forger to help speed up the killing process. The Rogue lord, Oona’s Blackguard also provides some disruption to your opponents too if you want to stay alive in the long run.

Oona's Blackguard

Lord of the Class

In summary, even though with the above strategy, Exava is still in my opinion one of those Legendary Creatures which serves better as a support Creature rather than a General. Aggro style usually does not fare well in multi-player games which is why Exava may make a good 1v1 EDH General but not multi-player EDH General.

Leash On, Moving On

I was thinking artifacts that add or come into play with 1/1 counter… With that proper cards I think she could be gross in a artifact counter deck.

Thank you Sam for reading our post and your comment.

Till date there are not much to offer in Artifacts, but off the head, I could think of Dragon blood and Arcbound gang. Your idea does helps out a lot in the strategy too. Good strategy no doubt man.
