Commander Review: Theros – Awaken to the Call of Anthousa, Setessan Hero

Welcome back fellow EDH-ers to another round of Theros of its Legendary Creatures. Today we will be reviewing another Hero or much rather Heroine of Theros. Coming from a place called Setessa, Anthousa is the Heroine who could also be an army all by herself.

Before we begin, here a brief look at Anthousa’s stats:-

Types: Legendary Creature – Human Warrior

Card Text: Heroic – Whenever you cast a spell that targets Anthousan, Setessan Hero, up to three target Lands you control each become 2/2 Warrior Creatures until end of turn. They’re still Lands.

P/T: 4/5

Showcasing another variant take on the ability Heroic, Anthousa converts each spell you cast that targets her into three 2/2 Warriors. It is to be noted that you do not have to change your Lands into Warriors if you don’t want to with her Heroic trigger as the wording states “up to three”. That means you could choose from zero to three Lands to animate into Warriors. First look at Anthousa, she falls into this group of Creatures which I called the Land Awakeners. Joining the ranks with Jolrael, Empress of Beasts & Kamahl, Fist of Krosa; Anthousa also animate Lands into Creatures, although she only does it to Lands you control. As a Creature, she has quite a decent cc to power curve, being a 5cc for 4/5. Not a small power for a Commander.


Commander Potential

Mono Green in EDH has mostly been about mana ramping. Anthousa does not seem to fit very well into that theme. Sometimes changing your Lands into Creatures could be a dangerous move as MtG is packed full of ways to get rid of Creatures. Changing Lands into Creatures make them all the more vulnerable to removal. Anthousa maybe a big Creature herself but the Lands she animate are not. Your opponents may not want to get rid of her because they may just be waiting for that chance to wipe your Lands off by casting Volcanic Fallout when you trigger Heroic. As she is a mono Green Creature, your deck will also be mono Green, limiting your spells to Green. An honorable mention is that the animated Lands are Warrior Creatures. Combine with Sosuke, Son of Seshiro, the animated Lands will be able to kill any Creatures they dealt combat damage to at the end of combat. With an Instant targeting Anthousa, you have three surprise blockers which will kills anything they deal combat damage to. Since the animated Lands have no color, most Creatures’ “Protection from color” can’t defend against this combo. Lost Lands to this combo can be retrieved with Life from the Loam.

Warriors do not simply fight to win. They fight to win ultimately.



In normal variant, Anthousa’s Heroic trigger is a pretty good deal since you are only facing down one opponent. Once he or she is open, you could just go in with the alpha strike by triggering Anthousa’s Heroic a couple of times and attack with whichever Lands that do not have summoning sickness. In EDH though, if you go in on one opponent with that tactic, another opponent may just cash in on the situation before the end of your turn by destroying your Lands which are still Creatures after you are done with the alpha strike. That Heroic trigger could then be your downfall too. Personally I feel that Anthousa do not has that much impact as a Commander than most of the other preferred Green Commanders (Azusa, Lost but Seeking; Omnath, Locus of Mana) I had seen before.
