Hello fellow EDH-ers and welcome back another Theros set review. Today topic is about the last in line of the high and almighty gods of Theros. Showcasing with today review Legendary Creature is the Green God of the five Gods in Theros. So without further ado, let us begin.

Nylea, God of the Hunt

So before we begin, let’s have a look at the stats of the Green Goddess.

Nylea, God of the Hunt

Card Name: Nylea, God of the Hunt

Types: Legendary Enchantment Creature – God

Card Text: Indestructible

As long as your devotion to green is less than five, Nylea isn’t a Creature.

Other Creatures you control have Trample.

3G: Target Creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn.

P/T: 6/6

The same familiar template for the Gods is here too for Nylea. All in all Nylea is a very Green Creature. For 4cc you get a 6/6 Creature, although you need to be devoted to Green, something which should not be too hard as Green is good at putting permanents onto the battlefield. The other abilities also fit into the Green strategy. Green has a lot of fatties (big power Creatures) but strangely those Creatures always lack Trample. Nylea gives all of them Trample so you could Trample through little road bumps your opponents throw at them when you attack. The mini Giant Growth ability is also something good for pushing through extra damage. As Green is also good with mana ramping, with Nylea you could find some use for those extra mana.

Commander or Commoner

Of the five Gods, Nylea is the least possible to me to be a General. This is mainly because if one is to go mono Green EDH, there are a lot of other Green Commanders out there which far outshine Nylea. This puts her in a better spot as a support Creature more than a Commander. Numerous Green Commanders like Azusa, Lost but Seeking & Omnath, Locus of Mana; all have been used and played in our play group. Nylea just do not seem to do better than them but suit as a good mana sink for all the mana you ramp with the two mentioned Mana ramping Commanders. Green is also good at looking for Creatures (Altar of Bone; Captain Sisay; Chord of Calling; Hibernation’s End; Mwonvuli Beast Tracker; Survival of the Fittest; Sylvan Tutor; Time of Need; Wargate; Worldly Tutor), so it is not a huge problem to tutor for Nylea when you need her to be on the battlefield. Also because Nylea is not the General, you could use a multicolor Commander which opens up even more options for your deck.

Azusa Lost but Seeking

When going Green, mana ramp is still the way to go.

Nylea needs a lot of support to make it as a fine Commander. Her bow, Ephixis, might provide a certain edge and gives you some utilities for your deck. The static ability of the Bow of Nylea which is to give all your attacking Creatures Deathtouch would discourage blocking of your Creatures unless really necessary. This is also where Nylea comes in as the Trample she gives to your other Creatures will kills any blockers your opponents try to throw at your attackers. It is to be noted that you only need to deal one point Deathtouch damage to a blocker and the blocker will be died when combat damage is dealt and the rest of the damage will be considered trampled through. This basically means that for instance, take for example a 4/4 Creature with Trample and Deathtouch which is blocked by three 0/6 Creatures; you only need to assign 1 damage to each 0/6 and they will all die due to Deathtouch and 1 damage will trampled through. Green has a lot of low 4cc or 5cc Creatures with 5 power or 6 power but do not have Trample. Nylea will do well to help them.

Concluding the Worth

Nylea, God of the Hunt

Joining in the hunt instead of leading the hunt.

All in all, Nylea is a bit fell short of being a General. Her abilities are a bit too minor to make an impact as a Commander but she is nevertheless a good support Creature. An honorable mention her bow seems to be quite promising for the abilities it provides. It is a pity but also a balance that the bow is Legendary and therefore is only restricted to one on your battlefield (No Copy Artifact here). Tell us what you may think otherwise in the comments below. For now we are done with this God of the Hunt. We shall see you next review. Thurs till then…
