Theros: Bestow EDH Voltron more Power

Theros provide an interesting way to improve MTG’s Commander diversity. Bestow is one of the new mechanic that I found most interesting and choose to start with it first. In this blog post, we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of Bestow and how it benefits in certain deck types.

Let’s have a closer look at bestow ability shall we?

If you cast this card for its bestow cost, it’s an Aura spell with enchant creature. It becomes a creature again if it’s not attached to a creature.

Bestow cards are all Creatures and Enchantment card type.

Celestial Archon

Two in one

Back up creature

As such, based on the ability, the first obvious advantage it provides is when your creature being enchanted by Bestow card dies or leaves play, you will still have a creature with its ability.

That actually means you don’t lose out 1 card and you still have a creature to beat.

Board sweepers like the iconic Wrath of God and Damnation does not clean the board as clean as before. Opponents need to invest more cards and effort to ensure you do not get to attack on your coming turn after the enchanted creatures die.

Or you can safely nuke the board and still have creatures to attack on your next turn.

Boon Satyr

On or off, ever ready to strike.

Voltron usually have a problem to recovery after their Generals dies.

Although Bestow creatures doesn’t deals General damage, Opponents with lesser lives means they have lesser resources. Especially if they uses lives to gain cards like Sign in Blood and Deep Analysis. They have to be extremely careful to cast those cards.

Sadly, I found the disadvantages outweigh the advantages Bestow provides. Here are my findings.

High Bestow Cost

Yup! I have not found one Bestow card that cost less than 4mana. It is relativity hard to develop them as soon as possible. However, this disadvantage isn’t really that bad because board sweepers doesn’t cost very low also. Those board sweepers cards that cost less than 4 usually have conditions along.

Baleful Eidolon

Low Casting Cost but high Bestow Cost.

Difficult to cheat in

General like Zur the Enchanter can’t cheat Bestow cards as aura and gain their effects. Although we are able to search them via enchantment or creature tutors like Enlightened Tutor and Worldly Tutor, making them easier to assess to our hand, however we are not able to enhance our creatures by cheating them in like the same we did with creatures via reanimation or spells like Dramatic Entrance.

Zur the Enchanter

No interaction.

At this point of time, Bestow cards don’t give a significant advantage to EDH deck as each color does not have a lot of Bestow cards. Maybe in the future expansion of the Theros block may change my negative view point for Bestow if they are willing to place more crazy effects in them.
