Set Review Commander 2013 – Oloro, Ageless Ascetic

Hello fellow EDH-ers and welcome back to another review of the Commander 2013’s Commanders. Today Commander is one of the two from the controllish colors of the Esper. He is none other than Oloro, Ageless Ascetic. From the looks of the designs, I believe most of us had already noticed that Wizards direction for Commander 2013 is to explore more into how cards can interact with the Command Zone. Oloro’s way of interaction is the most quirky one that I had seen and tried myself, winning you the game by doing nothing. Interesting? No? Well, let’s just read on and see what I mean. Shall we?

Card Text: At the beginning of your upkeep, you gain 2 life.

Whenever you gain life, you may pay 1. If you do, draw a card and each opponent loses 1 life.

At the beginning of your upkeep, if Oloro, Ageless Ascetic is in the command zone, you gain 2 life.

Oloro, He who does nothing, was designed to be among one of the five Commanders for Commander 2013 to interact with the Command Zone., He could just sits all day in the Command Zone and wins you the game. Well not really winning entirely by doing nothing but at the very least he keeps you alive with the 2 life gain at the beginning of your upkeep even when he just sits in the Command Zone. He is designed in such a way that he functions very well without even having the need to cast him onto the battlefield. That can save you a lot of mana to cast him since he functions outside of the battlefield. 2 life gain may seems like very little but it could get very problematic in the late game especially when you keep a low profile in the game. Personally I had tried it and survived long enough during the onslaught on the play field as other players were busy slaughtering each other; or in our case then we were being killed by our friend’s Purphoros, God of the Forge deck which kills not one but everyone all at once. Life gain may not win you the game by itself, but it keeps you alive long enough to gain back your grounds. This could be established through Oloro’s color identity (White, Blue, Black) which are all very good control colors.


Winning the Game Like a Commander

Oloro’s color identity is in the Esper shard, the colors of control. As you can see from Oloro’s stats above, he let you gains life regardless of where he is. But there is an extra benefit if he is on the battlefield. Oloro could actually kills your opponents if he is on the battlefield as his second trigger let you pay 1 whenever you gain life to draw a card and make each opponent loses 1 life. To be honest though of all the decks I had seen using him, even the one I have, Oloro does just fine by sitting in the Command Zone. Seldom will there be instances where we ever cast him onto the battlefield. Although he is able to net you some card draw and kill everyone at the same time, but one with such ability is always the top target of the table. Therefore the chances or need to cast him is rather rare unless you are in need of a kill con.

The major game play of Oloro is the life gain he provides. It may not seem like a lot but it can be rather annoying over the course of the game especially in a multi-player game. It is actually due to the fact that the life gain is small that it causes other players to overlook it. Initial rounds of EDH are usually spent building up tempo and resources. In these first few turns, Oloro could easily net you six or even more than ten life. Furthermore most Esper decks play the role of controller in the game. They could control and neutralize threats and use that as the political means to stay in the game for a longer period of time. Most of the time you find yourself gaining tons of life before people starts turning their attention to you. That huge amount of extra life gained could all be used for many other purposes. You could say; draw some cards with Erebos, God of the Dead; Greed; Necropotence; or kills some Creatures with Kuro, Pitlord’s ability. Oloro could also be used to help neutralize some of the life lost to draw cards with Bloodgift Demon; Phyrexian Arena; Seizan, Perverter of Truth; just be sure though to moderate the numbers of all those, too many of the good stuff can be bad. Ultimately, if you really want to play through with Oloro’s “winning by just sitting there”, you can also use either Felidar Sovereign or Test of Endurance, both which allows you to win by reaching their required life total.

Looking further into Oloro’s Commander potential, his color identity gives you great versatility with control. Esper, among the 5 allied color shards, has the best control cards. Board sweeps are abundant in both White (Akroma’s Vengeance; Austere Command; Catastrophe; Day of Judgment; Hour of Reckoning; Kirtar’s Wrath; Planar Cleansing; Wrath of God) and Black (Damnation; Decree of Pain; In Garruk’s Wake; Life’s Finale; Mutilate). Whatever can’t be dealt with by board sweep can be further neutralized by Blue through bouncing it or stealing it over to your side. There is no shortage of support control cards in Esper with Oloro acting as a life gainer to keep you in the game. Furthermore the other Commanders and Creatures within Esper colors are all very good for controlling the game. They could be use in the deck too depending on your chosen strategy. For example, I had chosen to utilize Oloro in an Esper Artifact deck with the other Esper Commanders (Dromar, the Banisher; Merieke Ri Berit; Sharuum the Hegemon; Sydri, Galvanic Genius) as support Creatures.

Summing it Up

“Why attack when you can just sit here and win? Why is the Earth round?? Why is Sylvan Primordial banned in EDH????”

Oloro being one of the Commanders of Commander 2013 designed to interact with Command Zone will be a pity if used in deck but not as a Commander. He was designed to work perfectly in the Commander seat, doing his job even when not being summon onto the battlefield. Oloro falls into the category of Commanders which I would call “Color Commanders”. These Commanders are generally chosen for their color identity, which provides you the card pool for your desired play style. They are mostly never casted from the Command Zone. Oloro plays that similar role but comes with an added life gain even while he is in the Command Zone. That life gain he provides can be view as an extra bonus and the deck can also be built around to utilize this extra benefit. That is not to say that Oloro can’t be play as a normal Creature as his two other triggered abilities are also beneficial to use, especially at the later stage of the game when opponents are low on life and you need a kill con to win. Otherwise, Oloro works just fine by sitting in the Command Zone in an Esper color deck letting you have access to all the Esper colored spells.
