Journey into Nyx Poster

Heading into the Enemy’s Base

Theros block as Wizards puts it is their top down design set. Many of the cards are designed to function as cards with as much as possible reference to the Greek Anthology. Coming to the final expansion of Theros Block, we are presented with Journey into Nyx where our hero of the story, Elsepth had set journey to where the Gods of Theros reside to end the threat to Theros. For this article, we will be talking about one of and the only non-God legend of the set. So without further ado, let us introduce today star of the article, King Macar, the Gold-Cursed, one of the possible Commander from Journey into Nyx expansion.

All the Gold in the World

King Macar is a reference to the Greek Anthology of King Midas. Both are famous for their touch of Gold whereby anything they touched will become gold. Happy at first for having the gift, both will soon to find out that their gift was in fact more of a curse, as even food they touched becomes gold too, this rendering them unable to eat without attend by their attendants. What worse was that Midas’ daughter became gold after he touched her. Although unknown if the same happened to Marcar, it could be seen in his art that he was surrounded of the things he had touched, including a woman, presumably his wife or daughter.
Now before we move on, let us have a look at Marcars’ stats:-

 King Macar, the Gold-Cursed

Card Name: King Macar, the Gold-Cursed

Types: Legendary Creature – Human

Card Text: Inspired – Whenever King Macar, the Gold-Cursed becomes untapped, you may exile target creature. If you do, put a colorless artifact token named Gold onto the battlefield. It has “Sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.”

P/T: 2/3

Ohhhh…. I see….

Marcar is one of the few Creatures in the set to have the Inspired ability from Born of the Gods. His Inspired ability was actually preview from the previous set of Born of the Gods as the Sorcery, Gild. The nature of Gild was very much a removal, thus Marcar’s inspired ability is also of the same nature since it is the direct brought over of the Sorcery. The most common way to tap Inspired Creatures was to attack with them; attack requires tapping them unless they have Vigilance. That way poses some amount of danger as you run the risk of them being blocked and killed in the process. Giving them a tap ability is a great alternate way to tap them. Thus when your turn comes by again, the Inspired Creatures all untap and be Inspired. Speaking from experience, I was able to control my opponent’s Creatures with the normal untap step and tapping Marcar with Springleaf Drum & Black Oak of Odunos. If you want the process to be faster, you can use Umbral Mantle which can untap at anytime. Below are some ways to tap Inspired Creatures.

Black Oak of Odunos / Bramblesnap / Llanowar Behemoth / Topan Ascetic Tap another untapped Creature you control to get +1/+1 till end of turn.
Earthcraft Tap another untapped Creature you control to untap basic Lands.
Field Surgeon Tap another untapped Creature you control to prevent next 1 damage to target Creature.
Freed from the Real Aura which allow you to tap or untap enchanted Creature for as much U as you can afford. Best Aura to combo with Inspired Creatures.
Glare of Subdual / Opposition Tap an untapped Creature you control to tap stuff.
Keldon Battlewagon Tap another untapped Creature you control to get +X/+0 till end of turn. X is power of tapped Creature.
Hair-Strung Koto Tap an untapped Creature you control to mill a player.
Hankyu / Heavy Arbalest / Viridian Longbow Let equipped Creature able to tap and deal damage to a target.
Healer’s Headdress Let equipped Creature able to tap to prevent next 1 damage to a target. Also boost the toughness by 2.
Kyren Negotiations Tap an untapped Creature you control to deal 1 damage to target player.
Mothdust Changeling / Telethopter Tap another untapped Creature you control to gain Flying till end of turn.
Paradise Mantle Let equipped Creature become a Mana Bird.
Springleaf Drum Tap another untapped Creature you control to get one mana of any color.

Commander Potential

“You want gold? Here! Have lots of it!!”

To use Macar as the Commander means your deck will be mono Black. Considering Macar’s controllish ability combined with all the Black disruption spells, a mono Black Control is not at all impossible. Combined with above ways to “inspire” Macar you get to exile a Creature every turn when you untap. If you need any reason to choose Macar as a Commander, that would be a good reason. A Commander who deals with Creature threats and ramp you while he is doing it.  Also with the amount of disrupt and control cards in Black, it helps to support Macar as your Commander. Black is not shortage of board sweep (Damnation; Decree of Pain; Life’s Finale) if things get too out of hand. There are also single target removals if you do not want to wipe out the board (Chainer’s Edict; Eradicate; Gild; Sever the Bloodline).

Otherwise Macar will serve as the permanent Creature removal which can be reuse repeatedly. As always with all high profile Commanders, Macar being a permanent source of removal is definitely going to attract a lot of attention once he hits the battlefield. It will very frustrating to keep summoning him from Command Zone.

Golden Experience

King Macar, the Gold-Cursed

The Richest and the Poorest.

In conclusion, as much as we hate our Commanders to die as soon as they hit the battlefield, Macar’s board control is powerful enough that make him a very good choice as Commander. Mono Black EDH decks are not that bad with their control, disruption and removals. Black is also notoriously packed with tutors which you can use to find that silver bullet for the situation. Choosing Macar as the Commander will save you a tutor to search for him since he is always available in the Command Zone. Furthermore since it is Black we are talking about, there is also the option to let Macar died and resurrects him from the graveyard if you do not want to pay the Commander tax. Black is the color we all go to when you need to bring something back from the graveyard. Doing that will save you all the Commander tax, and if your graveyard gets exile you can just send Macar back to the Command Zone.
