“We are not just Tools.”

Hi and welcome back for the last few non-Commander (not Legendary Creatures) cards for Commander 2015 set review. Today article we will be looking at the new Artifacts and Lands of the set. As per previous articles, we will talk about each card’s political and self value; and also their impact in both EDH and normal variant. So without further ado, let us have a look at these last few non-Commander Artifact and Land cards.

Artifact:

There are a total of 5 new Artifact cards added for this set and they are as follows:-

Blade of Selves

Blade of Selves

  • The number six member of the Myriad cycle, the Equipment serves as an extra way to give Myriad to any Creature it is attached to. This helps many decks actually as not all the Myriad Creatures are strong by default; some of the default Myriad Creatures are in fact just quite basic Creature. This allows those colors without a strong or decent Myriad Creature to join in the fun as well with a more decent Creature. As Myriad puts tokens copy of the Creature it is attached to onto the battlefield, the best Creatures to abuse it with are those with ETB and LTB triggers. Need some Lands, attach the Blade onto Solemn Simulacrum and attack. Need to kill some Creatures, attached the Blade to Dark Hatchling, Nekratal or Shriekmaw and attack away. Got some annoying Artifacts, Enchantments or Lands that need to be deal with, attached it onto Acidic Slime and attack to see who dares block the Deathtouch legion. Got multiple targets of threats you want to destroy at the same time, attach the blade onto Terastodon and attack on. The Blade is versatile in this way as you can customize it to whatever ETB or LTB triggers you need regardless of colors. On a side note, the Blade is also one way to include Myriad into your deck if your Commander is colorless as the other Myriad Creatures all have a color identity and cannot be use in colorless Commander decks.
  • As per others of the Myriad cycle, this becomes totally useless in normal variant. For the others in the cycle, you would at least get a Creature but with the Blade you only get a 2cc Equipment costing 4 to Equip and does nothing at all.

Sandstone Oracle

Sandstone Oracle

  • In some way, the Oracle has the trigger as Slithermuse, another Creature which refill the hand. One difference is that Oracle is an ETB and Slithermuse is LTB. The trigger is quite a decent late game hand refiller in EDH. The trigger also works better in EDH multi-player as you have more choices to choose for its ETB trigger. The potential I see in this hand refiller is that it can go into any deck of any color identity as oppose to Slithermuse which is Blue. As with any other Creature’s ETB trigger, it is not always necessary to hard cast the Oracle. You can always reanimate it as and when you need it. As the Oracle is an Artifact Creature, reanimation for both Artifacts and Creatures can be use here. If all else fail, the Oracle is still a good late game play to refill your hand. Not a must add but a moderate card to use.
  • Not that favorable in normal variant due to its high cc. It might be a good reanimate target but that should be reserve for more deadly Creatures to reanimate. Another possibility might be to combo it with Goblin Welder for the deck to refill the hand when needed. Otherwise the cc is still the main problem to play the Oracle in normal variant.

Scytheclaw

Scytheclaw

  • The Living Weapon version of the Equipment Quietus Spike. This ability pretty much started with the Onslaught Ebonblade Reaper who packs its own surprise by attacking as a Morph Creature and then can Morph up after it got through before combat damage is dealt to deliver the half-life strike. Scytheclaw is pretty much the same as Quietus Spike except less the Deathtouch part. It can be view as an extra Spike though. Otherwise pretty much a foil to other players if your play group has players who like to gain a lot of life.
  • I do not see any use for Scytheclaw as much as its counterpart Quietus Spike is ever use in normal variant. The Spike seems to more useful though for its lower cc of 3 as compare to Scytheclaw of 5. And also that Deathtouch the Spike provides is much better than Scytheclaw.

Seal of the Guildpact

Seal of the Guildpact

  • A very good addition to multi-color decks. Following the line of Medallions (Emerald Medallion; Jet Medallion; Pearl Medallion; Ruby Medallion; Sapphire Medallion), the Seal is actually similar to the cycle but reduces for two colors instead of just one like the Medallions; thus the high cc at 5. Point to take note for this Artifact is that you need to choose two colors even when you are playing a mono-color deck. Bomb spells always cost a lot of mana to cast and any cost reducers in EDH is most welcome. The Seal being an artifact goes into any decks. And the fact that it reduces for two chosen colors, any spells which are of the two colors are reduce by 2. A good card to add to your deck if you need a cost reducer in your deck.
  • I am quite skeptical of the Seal usefulness in normal variant mainly due to its high cc. Games can be very fast pace in Legacy. The Seal does works Miracle in the long run but it just does not make the cut as an effective enough cost reducer in normal variant as compare to the Medallions.

Thought Vessel

Thought Vessel

  • Time and again we may have many bomb spells in our hand waiting to be cast while we store that mana to cast it. This wait can go on till we reach the maximum hand size and has no choice but to discard down to maximum hand size. The Thought Vessel actually solves the above problems all in one. It provides mana to cast the spells and also allow you to keep those spells in your hand pass the maximum hand size. Much like Reliquary Tower, the Vessel is quite essential to most EDH decks. There is not much disadvantage for adding it to the deck.
  • The Vessel might be quite useful for Control decks in normal variant as they tends to be more reactive than proactive. Those decks usually runs into standstill often ending up having to choose and discard down to maximum hand size. That situation is where the Vessel will come in handy.

Land:

There is only 1 new Land added for this set:-

Follow th

Command Beacon

Command Beacon

  • The one and only Land added for the set is yet another one which interacts with the Commander again. This Land is a must add if you want or need to cast your Commander multiple times. The Command Zone is good place to ensure that your Commander will be available whenever you need it. Thus every time it is put away, one can just put it back to the Command Zone ready to be cast again. The problem with that is that the Commander Tax will pile up to the point where you cannot afford it anymore. That is where the Beacon enters the picture. It brings the Commander into your hand allowing you to just play it with the normal casting cost or cheat it onto the battlefield from the hand with Deathrender; Dragon Arch; Quicksilver Amulet. Other alternatives are Cauldron Dance; Elvish Piper; Hunting Grounds; Mindwrack Liege; Norwood Priestess; Sneak Attack; Through the Breach; all are cards which can cheat Creatures from your hand onto the battlefield skipping the Commander Tax if there are any. A good addition to all decks.
  • Not applicable in normal variant. There is no Commander to call from the Command Zone in normal variant.
