Hello there fellow EDH-ers and welcome to another review article on the Commanders of Commander 2015. Today we are looking at a member of the Izzet League from Ravnica. The guild is a group eccentric scientists group who strive to invent and improve things. Their color combination is Blue and Red, two very spell centered colors. Today featured Commander is also the Experience Commander for the Izzet color combination. Now before we move on, let’s have a look at the Commander stats.

Spells Overload

Mizzix of the Izmagnus

Card Name: Mizzix of the Izmagnus

CMC: 2UR

Types: Legendary Creature – Goblin Wizard

Card Text:

Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell with converted mana cost greater than the number of experience counters you have, you get an experience counter.

Instant and sorcery spells you cast cost 1 less to cast for each experience counter you have.

P/T: 2/2

As mentioned earlier, Mizzix is the Izzet Experience Commander. Mizzix is a very Izzet orientated as can be seen from his focus on Instants and Sorceries. Mizzix abilities have very strong synergy as the experience counter reward makes it easier to cast Instants and Sorceries to gain experience counters given that you only get experience counters when you cast Instant or Sorcery with cc greater than the number of experience counters you have. It is not too difficult to cast spells with higher cc than the current number of experience counter you have because you get 1 discount off your Instant and Sorcery for each experience counter you have. That means that if you have four experience counters the 5cc spell you be casting to get an experience counter already cost 4 less to cast. Basically Mizzix has a very clean design and clear direction to build the deck if you use him in your deck.

Spell Mastery

Arcane Melee

“Is that the best you got?!!!”

Mizzix main theme is about Instants and Sorceries. Your deck will need to have numerous of them in order to fully utilize his abilities. Although his ability already discount the casting of Instants and Sorceries, there is no harm in adding more ways to reduce the casting cost of those spells. This is to help the deck during when Mizzix is not on the battlefield so you won’t be stuck with high cc spells in your hand. Below are some ways to reduce cc before Mizzix come in or when he is taken out by opponents.

Arcane Melee

Reduce cost of Instants and Sorceries by 2 less for everyone. Political tool.

Cloud Key

Reduce the cost of chosen spell type (Artifact; Creature; Enchantment; Instant; Sorcery) by 1.

Goblin Electromancer

Your Instants and Sorceries cost 1 less.

Helm of Awakening

Reduce all spells cost by 1 less for everyone. Political tool.

Jace’s Sanctum

Your Instants and Sorceries cost 1 less. Added Scry 1 whenever you cast Instant or Sorcery.

Mana Matrix

Reduce your Instant and Enchantment spells cost by 2 less.

Ruby Medallion / Sapphire Medallion

Your Red and Blue spells respectively cost 2 less.

Seal of the Guildpact

Reduce your spells cost by 1 less for each color it share with the colors you have chosen while casting the Seal.

Semblance Anvil

Reduce spells which share a card type with card imprinted on Anvil cost by 2 less.

Stone Calendar

Reduce your spells cost by 1 less.

As mentioned earlier, Mizzix can be a huge target when he hits the battlefield due to his abilities. A very common way to get the experience counters is by Proliferate as the counters stay on you even when Mizzix is not on the battlefield. You could cast Mizzix and get at least one counter and follow it up by increasing the counters with Proliferate after that. Thereafter you can call Mizzix back when you got the critical or killer amount of counters.

From another perspective, Mizzix is also quite a good support Creature to Commanders like; Melek, Izzet Paragon; another Commander Creature in the same pre-con deck with Mizzet who also benefit casting of Instants and Sorceries. Both of them combo with Melek giving you a Future Sight of your library top for Instants and Sorceries while Mizzix reduces the cost of those spells as you gain experience counters from casting them.

"More! More Spells!!"

“More! More Spells!!”

Conclusion

"The more you cast the more easier it gets."

“The more you cast the more easier it gets.”

Mizzix is very much a build a round Commander. As the Experience Commander for Blue and Red, he fittingly depends on you casting Instants and Sorceries to gain experience counters; which in turn reduces the cc of your future Instant and Sorcery spells. Regardless of being the Commander or normal Creature, he is very restricted in deck building as he is quite limited and direct in his design. In a deck full of Instants and Sorceries, his abilities will improve the performance of the deck greatly. But in any other decks, he really does very little to nothing to help out. Unless going that direction (Instant and Sorcery) we do not really recommend putting him in the deck.

What do you think of Goblin Prodigy from Izzet? Do you have a deck idea for him to be the Commander of your deck? Share with us your ideas and also what you think of him in the comments below. I will end it here for today article. Do stay tune for more reviews for Commander 2015. Till our next article.
