Set Review Commander 2015 – Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas

Moving on with the Commander review for Commander 2015 set, we are at the military-minded color combination of the Boros. The Boros colors provide swift attack and damaging spells which allows the players to end games fast and furious. Both colors of White and Red have numerous weenies which can put the pressure on the opponents as early as turn one onwards. Combined with Red damage spells, opponents’ life points will drop to zero very fast. Following that discipline and philosophy of attack is Kalemne, today featured Commander.

 

Change of Belief

Iroas, God of Victory

“Believe in me for Victory.”

Kalemne is a Giant from the Theros plane. Normally the Giants of Theros draw their strength from the Land itself. Kalemne on the other hand had turned to another different source for her strength. That source is none other than Iroas, God of Victory. Unlike the other Giants who are mostly savage brute, Kalemne serves as the disciple of the Soldier’s God and leads superhuman troops; the likes of Giants, Dragons, and even Angels. With their savage brute strength alone, the Giants, Dragons and Angels are already a force to be reckon with. Now with Kalemne’s lead, they are even more fearsome on the battlefield and would ensure many victories ahead. Below are the stats of the Giant Soldier.

Whenever you cast a creature spell with converted mana cost 5 or greater, you get an experience counter.

Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas gets +1/+1 for each experience counter you have.

P/T: 3/3

I really like the design of Kalemne for being a low cost attacker. She is effectively both a 6 power attacker and defender due to both her abilities of Double Strike and Vigilance all for the low cost of 4cc. As the Boros experience Commander, she gets even more powerful as you gain more experience counters by casting 5cc or more Creatures. The method of gaining experience counters is quite foolproof in that even when the Creature spell is countered, you still get the experience counter. This is good against Control decks which would otherwise stop her from growing. She is relatively straight forward for her design being a strong beat stix which grows by herself when you play her theme of “leading superhuman troops”. It will not be easy though as 5cc is quite a high cost. You will not be able to cast a lot of the big guys every turn. Thus having some cost reducers in the deck is going to help you out. Below are some cost reducers which you can consider.

Kalemne’s theme or strategy is all about big Creatures; or to be more precise Creatures with high cc. Any Creature with 5cc or more will trigger her experience counter. Looking at her main tribe, we can find quite a number of Giants fitting that category. Many of them are which are from the Lorwyn and Shadowmoor sets are already in the Commander box of Kalemne. A good head start if you like to go the direction of using her as the main beat stix. Conclusion

Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas

“This!!! IS!!! THEROS!!!!!”

Due to the way of how Kalemne works with experience counters, she makes quite powerhouse for a Voltron. She not only comes with her own combat abilities to attack (Vigilance) and deal maximum damage (Double Strike) but also pumps herself up with the experience counters. Combine the usual ways like Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots which you can use to protect and attack with her as soon as she hits the battlefield, she can easily attack for lethal damage. Her way of gaining experience counters is also quite unique if you decide to use her as a Voltron Commander. Usually in a Voltron deck, most of the other spells will be focus on powering up the Voltron and is easier to deal with as the Voltron is the only threat on your side. With Kalemne as the Commander, it is different as casting 5cc or more Creatures is also pumping her up. Those Creatures also serves as “distractions” to protect Kalemne. If you take a look at the examples listed above, you can see that the 5cc or more Creatures are by no means weak and also threats themselves to be dealt with. If all else fail, you can still do it like the other experience Commanders where you gain at least one experience counter when Kalemne is on the battlefield and Proliferate the experience counter when she is gone after that. This is also what makes Kalmene stands out among the other Voltron Commanders as you can use Proliferate to pump her up without her on the battlefield; as unlike other Voltron those pumps do not go away even when she is gone.
