Hi there my fellow EDH-ers and welcome back for another round Commander review of the Commander 2015.Today we are looking at the other Simic and the last Commander from the set. One who came from long line of ancestry of the Orochi, colonies, a four-armed plane Serpent race on Kamigawa.

Female Orocho Concept

Orochi Snakefolk.

Orochi, the Big Serpent

Patron of the Orochi

People of the Great Snake.

The Orochi, as mentioned above, is a race of Snake humanoid on Kamigawa. They are anthropomorphic four-armed snakefolk living in groups called Orochi Colonies in the Jukai Forest of Kamigawa. The colonies are further segregated into three main tribes as follows.

  • Kashi tribe – Houses and breeds the Warriors of their kind.
  • Matsu tribe – Trains the Snipers and Scouts.
  • Sakura tribe – Associates with the race’s shamanic rituals and teachings.

Among each tribe, there are also its exceptions. Orochi magic is based on reverence to the Kami of the Land itself and is noticeably to be tied to the seasons. Leading the colonies then was Seshiro, along with his Warrior son, Sosuke and Shaman daughter Sachi. Seshiro’s family was noted to be the first to reach out to the Human Monk and brought about progress to the race. He was known to be very smart as he learnt many of the wisdoms from koan quickly and knew as much from the koan as he knew of blade strikes. With all that he had learnt, the Orcohi race advances from the basic poison and fangs life to greater wisdom.

Seshiro the Anointed

Advancement of the Tribe.

Claiming to be of descent from the great master is today featured Commander Kaseto. He is the present proud keeper of the received wisdom of his revered ancestor. Below is the stats of the descendant of the great Seshiro.

Kaseto, Orochi Archmage

Card Name: Kaseto, Orochi Archmage

CMC: 1GU

Types: Legendary Creature – Snake Wizard

Card Text: GU: Target creature can’t be blocked this turn. If that creature is a Snake, it gets +2/+2 until end of turn.

P/T: 2/2

The theme for the Simic Snake Commander seems to be of the sneaky operative; Kaseto gives unblockability to your Creatures, a common thing for the color Blue. Staying true to his tribe, he also gives a boost to the target if it is a Snake. In this regard, Kaseto is actually a Snake Tribal Commander if his ability is used to its full potential. The fact of why being unblockable is so good is due to the group of Creatures nicknamed the saboteurs who have abilities which trigger when they hit the opponents. The nickname of these Creatures came along very much like the scenario of Kaseto sneaking the Creatures behind enemy lines to generate an effect unfavorable to the opponent. The very first prolific implementation of this mechanic is with the Specters who cause opponent to discard cards. Later some Ninjas will also have these abilities but the process is made easier with their Ninjutsu ability which can keep opponents guessing if there are saboteur Ninjas coming. These Creatures usually will have no effects on the opponents if they did not hit the opponents. Kaseto serves as that bridge to allow them to get through the opponents’ defenses. I like the Tribal theme he has that help his fellow Snake friends if he targeted a Snake with his ability; acting as pump for them. The pump is not restrict to just once and can be used numerous times with each time stacking up as you use it.

Ninja of the Deep Hours

Going undercover.

Solid Snake

That part of Kaseto working like undercover operative by helping his fellow Creatures to sneak past the enemies’ defenses line is easily establish. Solely using the ability on big Creature or the Commander (kill by Commander Damage) alone can already kill an opponent. The creative part is mixing that ability with the saboteurs. This group of Creatures as mentioned earlier will do no harm if they are blocked while attacking. Kaseto provides the Rogue’s Passage for them to get to their target. Below are some examples of such Creatures and their sabotage abilities when they hit the opponents which you can consider for your deck. Do take note that some of them are not of color identity of Kaseto.

Lord of the Void

Touch of Doom.

Conclusion

Kaseto, Orochi Archmage

Upholding the Wisdom of the Ancestors.

Kaseto is very much a saboteur lord in my opinion. Using him as a common Creature is a waste as most saboteur do not shine if their ways of getting behind enemy lines do not show up. Choosing Kaseto as the Commander makes that way easily accessible. Kaseto cc is also low enough to allow for multiple casting should he get killed and goes back to the Command Zone. I would also recommend to use him with an Infect theme as a main win con as a lot of the Infect Creatures in Green are quite big (Phyrexian Hydra; Phyrexian Swarmlord; Putrefax; ). A few unblocked hits with a bit of power up will win you the game in no time.

So how would you use the saboteur lord or the Infect lord? Is there other ways which we missed out on how to further abuse the Orochi Archmage? Share with us in the comments below. And with that we have come to the end of the series of review for the Commanders from Commander 2015. We hope you had enjoyed reading the series as much as we have writing it. We hope to see you soon in our next article. Till then.

This is yours truly, Edward “Reaper King” Leong, signing off.
