Temur Ascendancy

Hunt or be Hunted.

Hello my fellow EDH-ers and welcome back to last of Fate Reforged series of article of the Tarkir past. Today article will be talking about the origin of the ideals for the Temur Clan. The aspect of the Dragon that the Temur revered most of the Dragons is their savager. Drawn to the Temur Regions Mountain’s slopes, the Dragons laid frontier siege on the Temur driven mainly by their hunger alone. Leading these Dragons is Atarka, the ultimate predator of Tarkir.

Apex Predator

Frontier Siege

Setting the World on Fire for a BBQ Feast.

Atarka, the Dragon leader of the Dragons at Temur region, is a robust Beast with antlers, horns and fur. She breathes Green Flames and is the apex predator of the region who spends her day, and most of her nights, hunting and feasting. As mentioned earlier, their insatiable hunger is what drives the actions of her and her brood.

In the original timeline, Ugin’s death resulting in the Dragonstorm stopping affected Atarka and her brood the same way as the other brood. They were hunted down one by one and Atarka died along with her brood as no new brood was created to replace the fell ones.

Tomb of the Spirit Dragon

Extinction of the Brood.

As with the rest due to Sarkhan’s intervene with the past, Atarka and her brood thrived instead. Having failed in her attempt to find a solution to the Dragon infestation and barely surviving the Khanfall, Yasova the then khan of Temur was able to save her clan due to Atarka’s barely sapient mentality. Promising to feed Atarka and her brood, the clan was able to distract the Dragons from attacking the clan. The Temur would went on from then to hunt and feed the Dragons. Eventually fearing the Shamans of Temur will revolt against them with their elementalism, Atarka initiated a purge that few could evade and outlawed the title “Dragonclaw”; fully taking control over the clan and forming her clan.

The Reign of Fire Arrives

Short backstory of the origin of the Temur ideal done, let’s have a look at the apex predator Dragon leader’s stats.

 Atarka, World Render

Card Name: Atarka, World Render

Types: Legendary Creature – Dragon

Card Text: Flying, trample

Whenever a Dragon you control attacks, it gains double strike until end of turn.

P/T: 6/4

Being in the colors of Gruul, Atarka has access to mana ramp and pumps allowing her to be ramp out and very violent. Her savagery really shines here with her attack trigger though as she gives all your attacking Dragons Double Strike. A full force of attacking Dragons with Double Strike is not a laughing matter. That is effectively a double power for all of them if they get through to the defending player. Atarka by herself is not weak too as she comes with Trample. Combining all her abilities, we are looking at a 6 power Flying, Trampling, Double Striking attacker. Most Creatures will probably die in combat on her Double Strike damage first and then her normal combat damage will all Trample through to the defending player. Take note that Trample damage also applies for Double Strike. That will be a lot of combat damage if she manages to trample though any blockers with her Double Strike damage which will then be added to her normal combat damage. Then there are also the numerous pump spells in Atarka color identity (Green) which pumps up your army for the attack; making each attack a lethal one. If there is any down side to Atarka, it will be her high 7cc casting. It may be easy the first few times to summon her from the Command Zone. After a few more casting from the Command Zone though, the Commander tax will be too high to pay.

Reign of Fire

Dragon Strength.

Atarka is a very straight up attacker. All her abilities are related mostly to attacking. As with all the other Dragon attack triggers, you will need Dragons for it to work. In this regard, Atarka fits well into a Dragon Tribal theme like a Dragon lord of sorts pumping your attacking Dragons by giving them Double Strike. There are no shortage of Dragons in Atarka color identity. Below are some Dragons for your consideration into your Dragon Tribal deck.

Dragon Buffet

Atarka, World Render

The World is just a huge Feast.

Concluding the article, Atarka is more recommendable as the Dragon Tribal army pumper than a Commander. Normally when choosing a Commander, I would look for low cost and very useful or game changing abilities. Atarka does has a very powerful pump ability but her high 7cc stops me from choosing her as the Commander. For her high cc her ability although powerful still feels somewhat lacking as a Commander compared to other Gruul Commanders like; Ruric Thar, the Unbowed; or Xenagos, God of Revels.

What do you think of the origin of the Temur ideal?  Do you agree upon our opinions on the forever hungry Dragon leader as just a Dragon pumper in the deck? Share with us what you think in the comments below. And with that we have come to an end for the Commander Review of Fate Reforged. We hope you had enjoyed the series as much as we had writing them. Here hoping to see you again in our next series of articles. Thus ending it here, as usual till our next article.

This is yours truly, Edward “Reaper King” Leong, signing off.
